Advocacy

Advocacy means to speak, to defend or to provide support on behalf of others.

From empathy to advocacy

How advocacy works

One Hillsborough provides a framework for both informal and semi-formal advocacy. In practice, this means that fellow residents act in support of one or more of One Hillsborough's objectives:

1. Addressing bias based on race, age, ethnicity, age, gender, ability, religion, or political affiliation to promote social and cultural diversity.

2. To initiate and support constructive dialogue within the township on equity, diversity, and inclusion.

3. To alert the Hillsborough Township Committee, and/or local police and municipal departments to address tensions in the community.

One Hillsborough affiliated residents have attended institutional meetings, both informally and formally, to voice their support or concern especially where fairness and justice are at stake, and particularly where underrepresented and unheard groups are involved. Non-partisan diplomacy and appeal to our better selves are the basis for these efforts.

Town-wide Community Conversation

The recurring town-wide Community Conversation that was initiated in 2023 is our broadest effort to invite civic engagement and to strengthen our social fabric while doing so: to foster goodwill, cooperation and understanding and contribute to the social and cultural diversity of our community, regardless of age, race, ethnicity, age, gender, ability, religion, or political affiliation.
